The plan was for a festive day out in York for some sightseeing and to experience the delights of the Christmas markets. Storm Bert decided to add a little spice to the occasion!
The morning saw the Explorers splitting into three groups to complete a chocolate themed treasure hunt. However, minds and fingers were soon numbed by the cold, driving rain and the competitive drive that is usually present in abundance faded into a desire for the basic needs of shelter and warmth. Although spirits were actually quite high it was clear that conditions were tough.

After spending some time recovering in a tea room, and with temperatures starting to creep up a little, one group headed for the railway museum while the others headed into the labyrinth of narrow alley ways to seek Christmas bargains. By now, despite the weather, York was heaving with people.

We all met up for a fish-and-chip supper and then sought out our meeting location with Mad Alice for The Bloody Tour of York. We followed Mad Alice (quite a character, with an incredible memory for names) from location to location where she enlightened us with the fascinating and entertaining history of York. The final “act” was the highlight, with audience participation. Lawrence was put in charge of lighting, while Jack became quite the showman in the role of Dick Turpin. This, of course, amused the Explorers greatly!

All in all, it had been a successful day. The Explorers had shown great resilience and toughed out the worst of the weather. They proved that they can look after each other and be trusted to stay together. They also demonstrated that they are valuable members of the community; after witnessing an elderly gentleman take a fall and receive a head injury they offered their assistance and called 999. They then called the leaders and with clarity and conciseness explained the situation and waited for their arrival. A huge thumbs up to Mafeking Explorers, you should be very proud!!
